Website Design Glossary
Shovelware
Placing free, but worthless information on a website.
SHTML
Normal HTML which includes server-side instructions. The file extension for webpages that include Server Side Includes (SSIs). The filename extension enables the web server to differentiate the pages that must be processed before going to the browser.
Side Door Pages
Doorway Pages, often an Article, created to rank well on search engines for one or more keyword phrases.
Simple HTML Ontology Inference Layer
SHOE. An XML-compatible extension to HTML that allows web copywriters to annotate their web documents semantically with machine-readable knowledge. It is designed to enable robots to gather meaningful information about webpages.
Siphoning
Techniques used to steal traffic from another website, such as including their Brand name in one's Title tag.
Site
A collection of webpages. A site can include pages from other websites or that are not on the same server.
Sitemap
A listing of webpages on a site which allows pages to be more easily indexed by the search engines.
