Website Design Glossary
Hierarchy
The vertical characteristic of a website's internal architecture. Denotes a system with a parent-child relationship.
HITS
Hypertext Induced Topic Search. A link analysis model which defines webpages as hubs and authorities and uses the graphic structure of the web to rank webpages.
Holding Page
A temporary page made available when a website is acquired with a message such as "Coming Soon", used until real content is loaded.
Home Page
The Index page. A natural entry page for visitors, generally awarded additional PageRank. It is the webpage users will arrive at in the absense of a specific webpage urlpath. The Home Page should end with /index.html.
Homepage Exit Rate
The frequency of how many visitors viewed a website Index Page and then left. It is an indication of inadequacy of site design, navigation, usability or that your keyphrases are targeting the wrong audience.
Hotlink
A clickable word, phrase or icon which, when clicked, will connect you with a selected webpage, either in the same website or in another website.
House Ad
An advertisement that a company places on its own website or network.
