Generic Top Level Domains
There are a number of generic Top Level Domains - some open to anyone and others open only to those meeting qualification standards.
.COM is the best known and should usually be your preference when selecting a domain name. This is because people generally enter dot com when they are unsure what the TLD is.
Other open generic TLDs include .ORG, .NET and .INFO.
Many businesses select .BIZ if their domain name is not available in .COM. Lesser used generic restricted TLDs are .NAME for individuals and .PRO for credentialed professionals.
In general, .COM domains are valued higher than the others and are in greater demand. Selection of your TLD should not be exclusively determined by this however. A memorable domain name might be even more important. Examples are Wikipedia (.ORG) and Photolog (.NET).
