Top Level Domains
A Top Level Domain is the part of the domain name to the extreme right, following the period. For instance, the .com or .biz.
There are three general types of TLDs, with a few sub-categories under them.
- Country Code TLDs (ccTLDs)
- Generic TLDs (gTLDs)
- Infrastructure TLDs (iTLDs)
Country code TLDs have different rules for ability to use them, depending on the trustee responsible for that particular country. In some cases there are no qualification requirements - anyone can purchase and use the ccTLD. In other cases, citizenship, residency, or whether you do business in the country might be factors.
Generic TLDs can be used by anyone in the world - although certain generic TLDs are restricted by qualifying factors such as .BIZ (by Business), .NAME (by individuals) and .PRO (by credentialed professionals).
The generic Top Level Domains that anyone can use are .COM, .NET, .ORG and .INFO. All other things being equal - .COM is usually the best TLD to select since people assume you are a .COM unless they know otherwise.
ode Top Level Domain (ccTLD) is an Internet Top Level Domain (TLD) which, in general, has been reserved for a particular country or dependent territory.
All ccTLDs are two characters in length. And all two character TLDs are ccTLDs.
The requirements for securing a ccTLD vary. In some cases there are local requirements (such as citizenship or physical presence). In others, such as Canada and Germany, eligibilty is open without local requirements.
Natural SEO SEM hopes that you find this TLD information useful in understanding the Internet - and your place in it.
