Email Glossary
Probe Message
A type of bounce handling for email address verification, often used in subscription-based mailing lists that can become filled with invalid subscriber addresses. If an email has bounced from a specific address, the system will send a warning message to the intended receiving address. If the warning message bounces, a probe message is then sent. If this also bounces the subscriber is removed from the mailing list.
Pseudo Anonymous Remailer
An anonymous remailer that knows the true email address of the originator.
Pull
To send data based on a user request for information or a webpage.
Push
To send data, such as email, without the receiver requesting it. The Internet is based on a pull technology where the user must request a webpage before it is sent. Broadcast media and email are push technologies because information is sent regardless of whether anyone wants to receive it.
Reminders
Email messages that will automatically be sent to users on a dates specified to remind them of important events, such as birthdays or appointments.
